Setting

Originally we were going to set our film on an estate full of flats, we were going for a gloomy kind of atmosphere,we were actually going to keep our entire film introduction in this area, however we realized that to create a more realistic approach to a film we would have to use different places to film out piece. The places we used where;

The drama studio: we used this as this room was very dark and could be made into a good setting for a gloomy dull room for the 'boss' of the two main characters in our film. Using this room allowed us to maintain this atmosphere throughout while also allowing the audience to see the contrast between 'Jimmy' and the 'boss', as it showed how Jimmy's superior is set out to be a cruel unforgiving person as the colours used can portray his nature and convey the typical representation of a gangster film.

Out side the school: We used the entrance to the school as this seemed like a good place where we could get many different camera angles, while also on this particular day when we filmed the chase scene it was raining which created an increasingly gloomy mood, while also the lighting also allows the audience to feel a dramatic irony as, everything is going wrong for them that even the weather isnt on their side. Also using the out side of the school was good as it seemed very realistic, as there are many houses to give the effect of a street setting. Also during this chase scene we had to run through an alley which is a good code for gangster chase scenes.

Using these two different locations is good as it gives us a range of different camera angles and different effects. We made sure that we used comparison between the scenes though as to link them to one another and keep the same kind of atomosphere throughout.

Setting is important in a gangster film as looking at other typical gangster films such as 'Lock stock and two smoking barrels', as the opening for this is set in a street, which is a typical convention for this genre. This is why using a street in the opening scene as its important as we feel it relates back to a typical gangster genre style, while also this opening scene uses an alley to run down, which is another convention of this style.
I feel that this certain film opening has been the most inspiring to me to base our film intro off of as the way it conveys each character and how it uses the setting gave me ideas for my own piece, while also showing me how each camera shot can be used in these types of setting which was important to allow us to confortably film our piece.
