Props
The use of props in our film was vital, although we didn't use that many the ones we used were key into showing an idealistic representation of our characters. The way in which we portrayed them was key into how the audience would relate to or convey them.
Our main prop was a cigarette: the reason that this prop is of such a high significance is because this a a strong code for the unhealthy life styles of a typical gangster and in doing so we created a stereotypical representation of a gang member. We got this information from all different gangster films, as watching such films as, Snatch, Lock stock and two smoking barrels and Reservoir dogs. Each of these films have most of the main characters smoking, as this creates a certain effect within the scene as it allows the audience possibly see their rebellion against society and how they are wishing to test fate by trying to kill themselves, or even just not appreciating life as it is. another way that it can be viewed is how it gives them this 'Hard man' attitude, which the audience like, especially their target audience of the male gender, as a lot of men would like to be viewed as this cool, sly, ballsy character.
A cigarette is used as symbol, as this is a symbol of how a typical gangster lives their life, uncaring of health and with a negative attitude of life, it is used to show how they deal with everyday stress of their gangster lifestyles. It shows how they cannot cope so therefore they have to turn to a kind of drug just to live in a world full of everyday problems.
All this information just comes from a cigarette, and even though the audience may not immediately think of this bits of it will form subconsciously in the back of their mind creating their own representation of the characters.
One other piece of costume that was important in one particular scene which is quite important as well was the 'Bosses' tie as when him and Jimmy had a meeting jimmy was not wearing a tie and the boss was, this shows status between them as even though jimmy is higher that the boss, just having that extra bit of costume makes him out as to be of a higher social class, therefore showing the audience the authority that the boss commands over his subordinates.
