This was the website we used to get our music from, and the reason we chose this website was because we needed to get 2 pieces of music without copywriting, and as this website contains whole lists of different beats and tunes that we are freely allowed to use without copywriting we found this most ethical while searching around.
We felt that because or film intro stared with a chase scene, that we were going to need a fast beat with drums and a possibly rocky feel to it, as this type of music sets the right atmosphere, and is also widely used in typical gangster films. I had to go through quite a few different beats to find this and i had a lot of test runs until i cam across this particular piece which actually fitted our scene. I had to do research in order to see for my self which type of music is used in these types of scene, and in doing this i analyzed Reservoir Dogs and saw how the chase scene also contained this style of music in a chase scene.
The other piece of music i got from this site was for my scene where the two main characters meet the Boss, this piece was completely different from the chase scene as it was slower with pianos and brass instruments with violins added. The reason i used this type of music for this particular scene was because this music appears to the audience to be very classy and gives the Boss a sense of high social status, and in doing this it allows the audience to see the authority that he possesses over Johnny as he enters the room. This is used to show how Johnny, is entering a different kind of world, which he feels totally out of his element in, it shows a real insight to a real gangsters life style, this therefore shows the contrast between the two characters and the status between them.
Adding music to my piece helped me create a more dramatic film intro and allowed me to play around with it abit more, this let me fully understand what music makes a gangster film, a gangster film. I also learnt how to incorporate the music into my piece which i didn't know how to do before, while i also i used the volume control section to turn in down during large pieces of dialogue, and then turn it back up when the dialogue had finished.
Overall music to a gangster film sets the tone mood and atmosphere and i learnt that without this you can never really have the full effect that is needed for the audience.
